Located on Holly Beach Road not far from FM 510 on the outskirts of Laguna Vista, the Laguna Madre Christian Academy (LMCA) is housed inside an unassuming building. Passersby may not be aware that the neatly kept brown building is home to 60 students from three years of age through 12 graders which celebrated its first graduating class this Thursday.

“Our first seniors are graduating on Thursday, the 26th at Cornerstone Church in Bayview,” said LMCA Director Janice Stewart last Friday. “We have two girls graduating,” she said.

Those two students are Marissa Simpson and Amanda Mayes, Laguna Vista residents whom Stewart described as “beautiful girls, inside and out.”

Founded on South Padre Island in 1997, the school first began offering classes in 1998. Initially, only elementary grade levels were offered. As students began to grow older, parents increasingly requested more grade level offerings, Stewart said, until high school level classes were ultimately added.

“We’re just very proud that we’re finally here,” Stewart said.
