Thousands of sun and fun lovers began gathering at South Padre Island off Port Isabel, Texas, today for the Easter Holiday weekend. Girl-watching, swimming, surfing and sunbathing is expected to attract 60,000 persons, mostly the college set. All of the Island’s motels are filled and thousands of other persons are living side-by-side in a tent city that stretches for blocks. So far, police say most of their headaches with the throng have been speeding violations. Forecasters say the weather there will be perfect. For the Point Lighthouse:
The lighthouse steamer “Arbutaus” arrived at the point at 6 o’clock this morning with the lamp for the Point lighthouse and a man to set it up. She also brings materials for repair of the Padre Island lighthouse. The steamer will remain until the lamp is set up, which will probably be by Friday, when she will leave with the lampman. Major Quinn, engineer of this district, was expected on this boat, but came no further than Sabine Pass. A portion of the lamp fixtures were landed today. (Editor’s note: this was originally published in The Daily Herald on April 23, 1895.)
