The Point Isabel Independent School District [PIISD] held their regularly scheduled meeting on April 18 2023. The first item on the agenda was announcements which began with Superintendent Theresa Capistran letting parents know that the period of state examinations was beginning the next day, April 19, with the high school students and would be going on for the next several weeks. She asked that parents check with the calendar to ensure students would not be missing days until the end of the school year.

The first presentation of the evening was on pricing for the bonds that the district had put to market after the last election, where they were approved. This had taken some time to complete as the PSF, who insure school bonds, had run out of funds for this purpose. After applications in March, capacity with PSF was increased, allowing PIISD to receive the bonds approved for sale. With the bond sale, the district will be making close to $9.5 million after investing $9.2 million in purchasing it. The funds will be released to the district on May 17, 2023.

The second agenda item was recognizing a proclamation designating May 8 through May 12 as national teacher appreciation week and Tuesday, May 9 as national teacher day for PIISD. Capistran praised the teachers of the district.

“We cannot do the great work that we do without our classroom teachers,” said Capistran.

This proclamation was unanimously approved by the school board after a few board members made similar statements, praising the teachers of the district for their continued hard work in the wake of COVID.
The board also unanimously approved the purchasing of new student desks for close to $50,000.

The fourth item they heard from Capistran on was approving sending a group of students and one teacher for a trip to Washington D.C. at no expense for the district. This trip was open to all seventh-grade students and required them to fund their travel themselves. Two parent meetings were held to make sure parents and students had the opportunity to fundraise for this trip. This trip is being planned through Explore America, a company that plans educational student trips. This was approved unanimously.
