Construction began on jetties during 1933

Editor’s Note: Moments in Time is a collection of recovered newspaper briefs and other publications, compiled by local historian, Steve Hathcock, that offer a look back at the history of the Rio Grande Valley and the rest of the world.

Construction of the South Padre Island jetties began after the hurricane of 1933 and provided a big boon for business in the port.

According to former Cameron County commissioner Ted Hunt, a man who played a large part in the development of the area, the Port Isabel San Benito navigation district approached the federal government in an attempt to get ships into the port.
The jetties were built to protect the bar and were completed within 14 months. Hunt stated that Callahan construction company was contracted for the job and never lost a day of work due to bad weather.
