On Friday, Aug. 11, the 4A Port Isabel Tarpons traveled to Weslaco for a scrimmage game against the 5A Weslaco East Wildcats. The Tarpons finished the 2022 football season with a 9-3 overall record while the Wildcats finished the season with a 6-5 overall record.
The Tarpons offense took the field first and picked up two yards on a run on their first play. Trying to catch the Wildcats off-guard, PI went for a pass play on the next play, but it was overthrown. Third down saw no gain on a run and the series was reset to the 50-yard line. Facing another third down, the runner fumbled the ball after picking up two yards and the series was reset again. On the next series, PI’s Luis Ramos was almost tackled in the backfield, but evaded capture and turned a would be loss into a nine-yard gain.
After picking up the first down, the Tarpons were penalized and faced a 1st and 22. They attempt a pass play, but the play was whistled dead on an apparent sack call. Unable to pick up a first down, the series ended.
On the next series, the Tarpons picked up eight yards on a run play. Then on the following play, running back Dylan Green broke free on a 42-yard TD run up the middle. PI was up 1-0.
On the next series, the Tarpons ran a final play that picked up about four yards, but that ended the Tarpons offensive series as the Wildcats’ offense took the field. Weslaco East’s first series only netted eight-yards as the Tarpons defense kept them in check.
