Claim cattle in Mexico

Herd of 108 alleged to belong To Sautenia Co. Sold At San Benito: Sheriff, C. T. Ryan, through sequestration papers issued by District Clerk Kowalski, today took possession of 108 head of cattle brought to Brownsville from the Mexican side. The cattle are claimed by the Sautenia Company, a large cattle ranch in the state of Tamaulipas. Through a representative of the concern. The stock was bought in Matamoros by a man named Copeland, who in turn disposed of it to C. S. Reynolds of San Benito.

Officers say the cattle are in bad shape and that it is unlikely the United States Customs Office would have permitted their importation on account of the fact that the ears of a great many have been clipped at so recent a date that the wounds had not healed. They also say that attempts were made to obliterate the original brands, leaving other wounds that were made since the cattle recovered from their last branding. (Brownsville Herald, Sept. 13, 1913)

Conductor lifts Valley boy from path of train
Special to the Herald
San Benito – A movie type of rescue with a conductor standing on the engine platform and catching a boy falling on the track was enacted here this week.

The hero was Harry Goodman, conductor on the San Benito Rio Grande Valley Railway, and the rescued boy was said to have been named Fox, although no one was certain of his name.

Goodman was on the platform or cowcatcher when the boy was seen running across the track. Goodman shouted at the boy, who was running with his head turned. Attempting to stop quickly, the boy fell forward. Goodman snatched him up from the advancing locomotive. (The Brownsville Herald, Sept. 24, 1933)
