For the first time ever, Port Isabel will be home to the Mighty Lady Tarpons Flag Football League. These teams are organized under the Mighty Tarpon Youth League. The league is looking for more girls of all ages
to participate.
Brenda Martinez is organizing and coaching the eight through ten-year-old team alongside Director and Head Coach Edward Torres.
“He has put so many hours into this program so our boys and girls can play ball,” said Martinez. “We are a small community, but we have kids that have passion, and want to play and better themselves. We as
coaches volunteer our time to help them and give them the opportunity to play and be a part of a team.”
Martinez has several years of t-ball coaching to her credit, alongside her husband.
25 girls have signed up for the league so far. Currently, there is still room for more girls to be a part of the league. Parents can contact Martinez at (956) 667-4739 or Torres at (956) 299-1450 to sign up their
children. The deadline is Jan. 1, 2025, unless the teams fill before then.
According to Martinez, practices are being held in an empty lot near 505 TX-100, Port Isabel from 6-8 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Games will take place at the Brownsville Sports Park, located at 1000 Sports
Park Blvd, Brownsville and the McAllen Sports Park located at 3301 Buddy Owens Blvd, McAllen.
The Mighty Tarpons Youth League is currently looking for sponsors for this season for both the tackle and flag divisions. Sponsor funds will go towards uniforms and other equipment.
“We all know there is a lot of kids that aren’t fortunate enough to have the funds to play, but if we see that they want to play, we sponsor or fundraise to help these kids get what they need,” said Martinez. “We don’t
want any child to feel left out. Everything we get in funds is used for the kids. At the end of the day, we are doing this for the kids.”
Martinez says the number one goal of the Mighty Lady Tarpon Flag Football League is to teach children how to work with each other, as well as build each other up.
