Several groups of Point Isabel ISD students were recognized at Tuesday’s regular board meeting for their accomplishments in UIL competition. It was a packed house as parents filled the boardroom for the occasion, which included groups from Port Isabel Junior High, Derry Elementary School and Garriga Elementary School.
One by one, students were called to be honored for success in their individual events and were greeted by the board members and applause from the community. The individual student successes led to a District-wide sweep with the junior high taking first place overall in District 32-4A and the elementary schools securing first and second place at their level. For the first year, Derry and Garriga Elementary competed as complete schools with kindergarteners through fifth grade students and were each able to send three students per event culminating in success across the board for both schools. Derry took home first in district and Garriga took second.
In other action on the agenda, the Board approved the enrollment of a new student in the Brownsville Regional Day School Program for the Deaf not to exceed the amount of $2,500, approved the 2015-2016 budget calendar, and made provisions to facilitate the May 9 General Election.
