The Keep SPI Beautiful Committee (KSPIB) met last Thursday afternoon for their regular monthly meeting. The committee quickly reviewed recent events in which they partook and discussed the upcoming schedule for the summer.
Chairman Susan Dalton opened the meeting, praising the recent Coastal Days education program that was put on by the City along with help from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Coastal Fisheries Office and UTB Graduate students. Students from Garriga Elementary participated in fun and educational activities to learn about coastal ecology and the importance of protecting the beach and bay. Dalton wanted the committee to join in on the event next year and said, “One of our big issues, as we all know, is trash on the beach, so let’s get ‘em young and educate them, and do what we can.”
The committee moved on to approve the minutes of April’s meetings and began to review the success of recent events including the Arbor and Earth Day Celebration, Cyclovia and the weekly recycling program. To celebrate both Arbor and Earth Day, the Girl Scouts of the Laguna Madre area dedicated a sea hibiscus tree at the butterfly garden on the Island. Spawglass, which is currently renovating the Convention Centre, donated the healthy tree along with landscaping services to plant it, and the event was a success with the Girl Scouts even singing to the tree at the end of the ceremony.
