8. City focused on infrastructure improvements

By ABBEY KUNKLE
Special to the PRESS

This year was a positive one for the City of South Padre Island with improvements and developments across the board.

Many City projects which have long been in the works began to come together this year including the new John L. Tompkins City Park, the SPI Community Center, major improvements to Gulf Boulevard, and the City’s largest ever beach nourishment project. City staff, along with the help of Committees including the Parks, Recreation, and Beautification Committee and Keep SPI Beautiful brought attention to park maintenance concerns and encouraged recycling efforts which were quickly addressed by City staff. On top of that, the City’s Coastal Resources Department worked diligently to continue dune restoration and near the end of the year, began their largest beach renourishment project yet, initially hoping to place about three times the usual amount of sand in erosion hotspots along the beach.
