A mild winter has led to a mild spring, which is good news for the throngs of Spring Breakers who will descend on South Padre Island for Texas Week beginning this weekend.
This year is expected to be busier than in recent years for more reasons than the weather, though. Increased traffic is expected due in part to changes at two other Spring Break hotspots: Panama City Beach, Florida and Port Aransas.
According to AL.com, the Panama City Beach City Council voted unanimously last May to ban the consumption of alcohol on City beaches during March of this year. Hundreds of residents attended the meeting to voice their opinion on the ban, which was met with raucous applause once the Council approved it.
Closer to home, the City of Port Aransas didn’t outright ban the consumption of alcohol on its beaches, but it did enact a curfew. No drinking is allowed on the beach between midnight and 7 a.m. on weekdays, and between midnight to noon on weekends. The City’s curfew message may have been garbled, however, as the idea that a full ban is in effect has spread far enough to spur stories clarifying the situation from media outlets across the state. The San Antonio Express News noted, however, that the Port Aransas City Council did vote to authorize themselves to expand curfew hours if they so choose.
