The City of Port Isabel has officially submitted a request to be an intervener in the Texas LNG docket filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The move comes after the City Commission voted to approve the intervener request at a special meeting Wednesday.
The item was placed on the agenda by Commissioner Juan Jose “J.J.” Zamora and Mayor Pro tem Martin C. Cantu, with Commissioner Jeffery Martinez voting for it. Mayor Joe E. Vega and Commissioner Maria de Jesus “M.J.” Garza were not present at the meeting.
As explained by several members of the group Save RGV from LNG who were in attendance, various parties can file to be an intervener. The process allows individuals, municipalities, or other interested groups to preserve their legal standing as FERC continues to evaluate Texas LNG’s application seeking approval to construct a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) export terminal along the Brownsville Ship Channel.
“Yesterday the BND (Brownsville Navigation District) filed a motion to intervene,” said Laguna Vista resident Maria Galasso. “They consider themselves a party to the proceedings. They will be kept informed of the proceedings,” she explained. The BND owns the land where Texas LNG proposes to build their facility.
