Last week, the South Padre Island City Council approved a large sum of money in budget amendments for City projects. Though the requests seemed to come all at once, many of the projects have been a long time coming and are expected to be great improvements for the City.
One of the approved projects that has been put off in the past is the repair of the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway boardwalk, which is one of the first areas visitors see as they enter the island. Half of the boardwalk has been closed off due to safety concerns, and the council has finally agreed to make the repairs, approving $16,000 for engineering services to begin the plans.
The new City Park and Community Center have also been long standing projects and have recently come to fruition. With construction continuing on the park, the Council approved $60,000, lowering the amount from the requested $92,000, to fund a combination concrete and brick paver parking lot, rather than asphalt, to improve the look and longevity of the lot. The Community Center has been completed, and the Council approved about $6,000 to furnish the building with equipment and supplies.
