Port Isabel High student David Hernandez is not unusual when it comes to the multi-talented, multitasking young people that populate the classrooms and hallways of good old P.I. High. Hernandez is an incoming sophomore and he’ll be doing double-duty for the next few months in instrumental music and football. The Press found him in the weight room this week and he shared his thoughts on the doublechallenge he faces as he looks ahead to his second year of high school.
Actually, doing band and football simultaneously is nothing new for Hernandez. He was brought up to the Silver Tarpon Marching Band when he was still in junior high. As a seventh
grader, he was playing the xylophone in the frontal ensemble for the Friday night football halftime shows, and playing in the backfield for the junior high football team.
When he started eighth grade he switched to snare drum and has been on tenor drums since his freshman year.
Hernandez has been hard at it, along with many of his football teammates, in the weight room for months, and says that pumping the iron is also good conditioning for marching band.
“It alternates every day, so tomorrow we’ll be doing chest and upper body. Then we’ll go back to legs,” he said.
